I like this post very much..Making the most of your downtime is a great business opportunity.. I agree that freelancer can work hard when really needed and just relax sometimes..The greatness of flexibility.. and what I like most is doing some business planning at an early stage. It helps to build a solid foundation of the business.

This might be one for our blog - I may quote a few with a link bank to your site if you don't mind? In all the jobs I've worked in, downtime has just been an excuse for an extra long lunch break or even an early finish at the office. This is much more constructive, nice read - thanks!

Thanks Zinni, that's a great point to keep in mind. I know how you feel about being far too busy to fit some of these things in, that's why it's even more important to make the most out of the rare downtimes when they do happen. Though if you've been working excessively lately, I think you deserve to opt-in to the last suggestion anytime. ;)

Thanks for leaving a few words, always happy to see your name in the comments!

Solid article, You raise some good points. All too often freelancers and small businesses alike make the mistake of wasting their down time when they could be securing new business or doing some self promotion. My current problem is finding some down time to fit these practices in because I am too busy. It is important to remember that marketing is about being selective, you shouldn't stop just because you are busy. If anything you should keep it up because that is how you weed out the less desirable clients and pick up the more creative ones.
