Entrepreneurial Reads
Written by Verne on August 27th, 2007In my post about how to be a better creative writer I prescribed reading more as my #1 tip. And as I fully ramp up into my full-time entrepreneurship, one thing I’m really looking forward to is bulking up my RSS feeds on blogs and sites that surround marketing, design, and of course, entrepreneurship. Not only has frequent blog reading helped me to amass greater knowledge from those who know best, but it’s also helped me connect with like-minded individuals that inspire me with their perspectives on this glorious lifestyle we proudly share.
So as I grow my roster of feeds, I wanted to share with everyone some of my favourite blogs. If you’re an aspiring marketer, designer, entrepreneur (or all three), I recommend that you give these sites a read.
In this post, I’ll start with those focused on entrepreneurship. Here are my top 4 entrepreneurial reads.
Freelance Switch
I can’t count how many times I’ve linked off or referenced FreelanceSwitch, but quite simply if you’re in the business of freelancing (basically creative entrepreneurship), this site should be on your list of must-reads. FSw sits on both my favourite list of design blogs as well as entrepreneurship blogs by offering productivity tips, how-to’s, and resources for freelancers in all forms (including designers, writers, and photographers). There’s definitely an infinitely thin line between entrepreneurship and freelancing, but FreelanceSwitch successfully satisfies both flavours.
The Webpreneur
As the clever title of the site suggests, this blog focuses on the business of entrepreneurship in the context of the web. Serving up a blanket of topics that literally cover everything web and business, including news, events, resources, and tips, this site is a great read not only for all aspiring webpreneurs, but pretty much anybody who is part in the social media landscape.
Young Entrepreneur
YE was one of the earliest entrepreneurial blogs I picked up and I’ve found it to be a great site for start-ups looking for a guiding light on the ins and outs of being your own boss. YE also offers great insight on online marketing – an aspect that should be integrated within any modern day business (regardless of size). As an added bonus, this blog has been nominated a number of times for Best Business Blog and Best Marketing Blog by the Blogger’s Choice Award, so you know the content is gold.
Young Go Getter
YGG is a great community of young entrepreneurs that delivers insight in the form of a blog and a forum. And because YGG knows that entrepreneurs come in every shape and size, it offers something for everybody – ranging from making your blog iPhone-ready to bad commercials to creating better direct marketing pieces. The writing of YGG’s primary author Travis moves away from the “X tips” and how-to lists that FSw is good for (see above), and instead offers more personal perspectives and discussions on entrepreneur-affected topics. If you’re a go-getter and you’re young (even if you’re not), consider adding YGG to your subscription list.
I’m always looking to pick up more entrepreneurial reads, so if you have some favourites of your own, leave me a comment!

I also drop by Guy Kawasaki’s blog once in a while, he’s got some good insights that are worth keeping tabs on.

You should also include a small section in this article on small company or personal blogs that focus on the subject. I’d like to find other blogs like yours and ours. I almost find them more interesting.

August 28th, 2007 at 10:12 pmThat’s a great suggestion, Shane! I love reading the blogs of other agencies and neglected to mention their value in this post. I think they sit in a category of their own, and I’ll be sure to highlight my favourites in an upcoming post. Cheers to agency blogging!
